Thompson was fined $200 under LR. 67 for the late declaration of S. Galloway as the rider of ALWAYS LOYAL.

Stewards sought an explanation from A. Spinks and J. Bowditch regarding the tactics they employed on their respective mounts PLAYACTION and UMANOVA, in particular the reason for PLAYACTION occupying a forward position in the early stages and the reasons why he did not proceed forward to the lead through the middle stages. Stewards questioned J. Bowdidtch as to why he continued to occupy a position to the inside of PLAYACTION rather than allow PLAYACTION to take the front. A. Spinks explained that PLAYACTION was up in distance today and his instructions were to have the horse positioned just behind the speed with cover if possible, however, when unable to do so he positioned the horse outside the leader. A. Spinks further stated that whilst he tried for the lead briefly when heading into the back straight he did not want to allow the horse too much rein to gain the front as he felt it would overrace and he would be unable to get the horse to come back underneath him. J. Bowditch stated that he had been instructed to obtain a forward position and he was hopeful that jockey Spinks would allow PLAYACTION to proceed forward and take the lead but did not want to relinquish his position to the inside of PLAYACTION as he would then be covered by ALWAYS LOYAL (S. Galloway), which was racing back to his inside and this would then result in him being unable to increase the tempo of the race on his terms and this was important as he had been advised that UMANOVA was one-paced and unable to sit and sprint. Stewards accepted the explanation of J. Bowditch and advised A. Spinks that in their opinion he had erred in the middle stages by not allowing PLAYACTION to assume the lead. However, stewards were satisfied that A. Spinks actions were not so unreasonable as to make him culpable under the rules of racing.

PLAYACTION was inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 300m.

A post-race veterinary examination of BILLY AUCASH revealed the horse to be exhibiting a cough along with some discharge from both nostrils. Trainer A. Ross undertook to advise stewards of any condition that may develop in the days following the event that may have affected the horse's performance today and advised stewards that he would now spell the horse.

Cahill) and TOPPING (E. Wilkinson) made contact on jumping away.

Approaching the winning post on the first occasion MR NICHOLAS and GRIEG, which were overracing, were forced to race in restricted room between BAHA (C. McIver) and SUNSHINE ANGEL, which shifted in.

ROYAL REIGN (S. Seamer) raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages, obliging its rider to take the horse to a three wide position in the back straight to allow it to proceed forward.

Near the 1600m when TOPPING assumed the lead, EASTLINE, which was trailing, commenced to overrace and had to be steadied from the heels of that horse.

EASTLINE and RAEBURN (S. Galloway) raced three wide from the 800m.

Near the 50m TOPPING was tightened and had to be steadied when TIMETABLE tired forward of it and ROYAL REIGN shifted in slightly under pressure.

Stewards sought an explanation from M. Cahill regarding the performance of TIMETABLE. M. Cahill stated that he was instructed to position the horse outside the leader and when attempting to comply with these instructions he was forced to ride the gelding vigorously in the early stages from an inside barrier. M. Cahill added that when BRANCH STACKER improved to the position outside the leader near the 1200m, rather than trail that runner he elected to shift TIMETABLE wider on the track and ride forward as he was of the view that had he have been obliged to race inside runners this would not have suited the gelding. M. Cahill further explained that TIMETABLE was immediately under pressure when ROYAL REIGN improved to his outside approaching the 600m and was disappointing in its finishing effort in the home straight.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          B. El-Issa, the rider of SUNSHINE ANGEL, pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii) of using the whip on 8 occasions in a forehand manner prior to the 100m and was fined $400.

Munce regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of KAUNDA. C. Munce stated that the horse did not feel comfortable to him during the race and upon straightening the horse, when pressured, immediately got its head up and tired in the home straight. C. Munce added that KAUNDA also laid in in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of KAUNDA failed to reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative B. Hearne advised that KAUNDA would now return to Sydney and indicated that Mr Lees would inform stewards of anything that comes to light in the coming days which may have had an effect on the horse's performance.

LEICA LION (K. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CELTIC DANCER, rider G. Colless explained that the horse faltered shortly after the start and as a result he settled at the rear of the field and in his view the gelding is best suited when leading or ridden in a forward position.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          C. Munce, the rider of PYROGRAPHY, which performed below expectations, explained that the filly never travelled well at any stage during the race and in his view proved very disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of the filly failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. Stewards intend to interview trainer P. Messara in relation to the horse's performance at a later stage.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          S. Seamer was questioned regarding the riding tactics he adopted on ADEBISI, which was ridden off the pace today, which is in contrast to its most recent start where it led. S. Seamer explained that he was instructed to attempt to get the horse to settle in the early stages and obtain cover if possible. Trainer D. Forster explained that she gave no specific instruction to jockey Seamer, however the horse has raced well in the past when not leading in its races. She added that colt was racing in a butterfly bit and rings which were applied in an endeavour to get the horse to settle in its races. The explanations of both parties were noted.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          B. Stewart was asked to explain the performance of CHOSEN TO FLY. B. Stewart stated that the colt never travelled well at any stage and despite his efforts to get the horse to travel it was unable to make ground at any stage. A post-race veterinary examination of CHOSEN TO FLY revealed no obvious abnormalities. Stewards will interview trainer M. Mair in relation to its performance.

Cassidy) shifted in and away from RASMUSSEN, which was holding a tight three wide line, resulting in THE SIXTIES (A. Spinks) being tightened for room and having to be checked. Stewards believed that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with a charge of careless riding, however both L. Cassidy and D. Browne (RASMUSSEN) were admonished and advised that they must provide more racing room in the future.

Leaving the 300m ZERO ROCK (C. Munce) shifted in taking SOMMERSEA DRIVE (O. Turpin) in on to LISTEN SON (L. Cassidy) which, when attempting to shift out to improve, was inconvenienced when awkwardly placed at the heels of RIGHTSON (S. Scriven).

Prior to correct weight being declared, rider R. Wiggins and trainer S. O'Dea requested to view the photo finish. After viewing this, jockey Wiggins ad Mr O'Dea made submissions that they were of the view that LYNCEAN ACADEMY, which was placed 6th by the Judge, had in fact beaten GHETTO BLASTER, which was placed 4th in a deadheat with PHELAN READY. It was established on the photo that the nose of GHETTO BLASTER was obscured between PHELAN READY and LUCKY LUNA. Stewards, after consulting with the Judge and acting under AR. 156(1), were satisfied that the Judge's placings were accurate and did not require alteration. There was a further delay to allow stewards to view the footage of the home straight to ascertain whether a stewards' objection could be lodged on behalf of the connections of LISTEN SON (L. Cassidy) against ZERO ROCK (C. Munce) being declared the winner for an incident near the 300m. After viewing this footage stewards did not wish to proceed and declared correct weight on the Judge's numbers.

Hammersley), ZEDACHARGE (Michael Palmer) and NEWSNIGHT (J. Bowditch) all raced wide throughout.

NEWSNIGHT was forced extremely wide rounding the home turn.

Stewards sought an explanation from L. Cassidy regarding the performance of JESS SAR BELLE. L. Cassidy stated that he was instructed to have the horse in a prominent position from its good barrier, however after missing the start he was forced to settle well back in the field. He further explained that passing the 700m he was trailing BRADFIELD (S. Seamer) and had ZEDACHARGE to his outside and he gave consideration to moving that horse wider on the track to improve, however felt it would be more beneficial to his chances to trail BRADFIELD into the race and progress wider approaching the home turn. L. Cassidy further stated that when BRADFIELD was not able to improve approaching and rounding the home turn, in hindsight he would have been better served progressing to its outside and making a forward move from the 700m as JESS SAR BELLE was cramped for room and unable to improve in the early part of the straight. Trainer R. Heathcote expressed his disappointment in the performance of JESS SAR BELLE and advised that the mare was uncharacteristically fractious prior to the start today. A post-race veterinary examination of JESS SAR BELLE revealed no abnormalities. Mr Heathcote undertook to advise stewards of anything that comes to light in coming days which may have had an effect on the horse's performance.

Munce) revealed that the gelding had sustained a minor laceration to the off hind leg consistent with being galloped on.
