Seamer that PUNCH ON be declared a non-runner on the grounds that it had been denied a fair start. After considering evidence from rider S. Seamer, trainer P. Balzen, starter J. Roberts and assistant starter M. Henderson stewards were of the opinion that PUNCH ON had been afforded a fair start and therefore declared that filly a runner and gave correct weight on the judge's placings as semaphored.

Near the 800m VANCOUVER GOLD was eased to allow EASY RUNNING (D. Browne) to take the lead forward of it, which resulted in RED SPUR, which was following and racing fiercely, having to be checked to avoid the heels of VANCOUVER GOLD.

Near the 750m PUNCH ON improved up onto the heels of RED SPUR and had to be checked. A short distance later RED SPUR then shifted out when racing greenly taking PUNCH ON, which had continued to race ungenerously, out onto SEARAYN (App M. Hellyer), which in turn shifted out taking MACCA'S EXPRESS (G. Colless) wider on the track.

Near the 300m VANCOUVER GOLD shifted in of its own accord and made contact with the running rail.

Colless was questioned regarding the disappointing performance of HUCKLEBERRY DANE. G. Colless explained that the gelding travelled comfortably in a trailing position and failed to respond to his riding shortly after entering the home straight and over the final 100m did not feel comfortable in its action. Trainer L. Birchley explained that HUCKLEBERRY DANE has not performed well when it has had to carry big weights and has in the past suffered from feet problems and undertook to report to stewards any occurrence that may become apparent in the coming days that would explain today's performance. A post race veterinary examination of HUCKLEBERRY DANE failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Stewards sought an explanation from App S. Bogenhuber regarding the tactics adopted on FALVELINA in the early stages, which settled back in the field which is in contrast to its normal racing pattern. App Bogenhuber explained that she had intended to ride the mare in a forward position however, after beginning only fairly FALVELINA did not muster the necessary speed from the wide barrier to obtain this position so she elected to restrain towards the rear of the field and ride the mare with cover. App Bogenhuber added that FALVELINA finished the race off strongly in the home straight.

A post race veterinary examination of BEER NUTS (M. Stewart regarding the tactics he employed on GENTLE GIANT and the overall performance of that gelding. B. Stewart stated that whilst it was his intention to go forward GENTLE GIANT was unable to muster the necessary speed to take up a competitive forward position in his opinion and he therefore restrained the horse to a rearward position in order to gain running closer to the fence. B. Stewart added that after receiving interference on the first turn GENTLE GIANT did not travel kindly from that point onwards and proved disappointing. B. Stewart further stated that in hindsight GENTLE GIANT may be a horse that needs to be ridden agressively to take up a position close to the speed in order to perform at its best.

Munce regarding the riding tactics he employed on FOREST DOLL which was restrained in the early stages, which is in contrast to its normal racing pattern where it is ridden in a forward position. C. Munce explained that he was instructed today to restrain the horse in the early stages. Trainer J. Thompon's authorised representative Mr C. Hull confirmed these instructions and pleaded guilty to a charge under AR135A in that he failed to notify stewards of this change. Trainer J. Thompson was fined the sum of $300.00.

At the start FANTASTIC FORCE (G. Colless) bumped RACING HEART (L. Cassidy), which became unbalanced and shifted out taking FANTASTIC BLUE (S. Galloway) out onto HOLLYWOOD AND VINE (D. Browne), which in turn shifted out and bumped FLYBEFREE (App S. Bogenhuber).

After racing 3 wide in the early stages FLYBEFREE was ridden forward after passing the 1400m to race outside of the leader near the 1200m.

Near the 700m WALPERSDORF (J. Taylor) when overracing had to be checked off the heels of FANTASTIC BLUE. WALPERSDORF then shifted out and hampered HOLLYWOOD AND VINE (D. Browne).

Stewards sought an explanation from G. Colless regarding the performance of FANTASTIC FORCE. G. Colless explained that he was unable to improve into the race approaching the home turn as he was held up on the heels of SMUGGLER'S INN (App J. Wood). G. Colless added that once he was able to obtain clear running FANTASTIC FORCE found the line well. Trainer A. Bailey stated that the horse has had an interrupted preparation due to the recent wet weather and he was satisfied with the horse's performance and expects FANTASTIC FORCE to take a fitness benefit from today's race.

Stewards questioned S. Seamer the rider of CINQUACASINO regarding the tactics adopted during the event. S. Seamer explained that it had been his intention to take up a forward position however, after pressuring the horse in the early stages he was unable to muster early speed and as a result was forced to position the horse wide in the second half of the field. He added that he was then able to improve during the middle stages when the pace of the race steadied down the back straight to a more forward position and the horse finished the race off well.

Palmer), which had been racing fiercely for some distance, shifted out and forcing MAROON BELLS (J. Holder) out onto BANANA KICK (R. Wiggins), resulting in that runner being taken wider on the track. J. Holder the rider of MAROON BELLS explained that due to this and in consideration of the slow tempo he then elected to ride his mount forward to obtain a position outside the leader near the 800m.

CANNA continued to overrace and near the 800m had to be restrained to avoid the heels of ROKATOKO (G. Colless).

Stewards sought an explanation from G. Colless regarding the performance of ROKATOKO. G. Colless explained that due to the slow tempo in the middle stages ROKATOKO improved onto the heels of ACQUIRED (D. Browne) on several occasions resulting in him having to restrain the horse and lose momentum. G. Colless further added that ROKATOKO accelerated well in the early part of the straight however, raced quite dour over the final 200m. G. Colless further stated that it was his understanding that ROKATOKO would now be sent for a spell.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          R. Wiggins was questioned regarding his riding BANANA KICK from the 500m until the 350m where it appeared that he lost the back of the fancied runner ABSENT FRIENDS which had commenced a forward move in the race at that time. R. Wiggins explained that when the pace increased through this section of the race BANANA KICK was left flat footed and unable to maintain a trailing position behind ABSENT FRIENDS. Stewards after viewing the patrol footage advised R. Wiggins that in their opinion he should have placed BANANA KICK under more pressure to move forward on the back of ABSENT FRIENDS when there was an opportunity to do so and believed he had erred in his riding through this section of the race however, stewards were satisfied that his riding had not breached any racing rules.

Colless regarding the disappointing performance of FIFTEEN CARAT. G. Colless explained that he settled the horse towards the rear of the field and during the middle stages the gelding did not travel well and after passing the 800m when trailing GOD'S HAND, FIFTEEN CARAT lost ground despite his efforts to maintain a position on the back of GOD'S HAND. G. Colless added that rounding the home turn the gelding made some ground however, failed to finish the race off as expected and was disappointing. Trainer H. Wilson stated that FIFTEEN CARAT does not perform at its best at Doomben and is not suited when racing to the inside of horses in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed THE to be exhibiting signs that it was short in its action. Trainer H. Wilson was advised that he must provide a veterinary certificate of fitness for FIFTEEN CARAT before it again races.
