Stewards Report extract : MR FAVULOUS (M. Hellyer) shifted in shortly after the start and made heavy contact with the hind quarters of I'M THE ONE (M. Cahill).
STAGE EXIT (J. Byrne) and SUSASHI came together at the start.
FIVE O'CLOCK overraced in the early stages and near the 700m was eased to avoid the heels of I'M THE ONE.
Also near the 700m SUSASHI shifted in away from I'M THE ONE and brushed the running rail, resulting in its rider E. Wilkinson becoming unbalanced.
Approaching the 400m FIVE O'CLOCK shifted out and made contact with TENACIOUS JACK.
Approaching the 200m LOMU (A. Spinks) had to be eased to avoid the heels of STAGE EXIT.
Jockey M. Hellyer, the rider of MR FAVULOUS, reported that near the 800m the bit pulled through that colt's mouth, which placed him at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event.
On return to scale a protest was lodged by G. Colless, the rider of 2nd placegetter FIVE O'CLOCK, against SUSASHI (E. Wilkinson) being declared the winner, alleging interference inside the final 100m. After taking evidence from all parties it was established that SUSASHI did shift out under pressure from the 100m and make contact with FIVE O'CLOCK near the 50m which resulted in FIVE O'CLOCK becoming unbalanced. In considering the matter, stewards were comfortably satisfied that the interference sustained in this incident exceeded the margin of a head and as a result upheld the objection and gave correct weight on the revised numbers of 2, 8, 1 and 7. E. Wilkinson was advised that in future he must stop riding and straighten his mounts sooner than he did on this occasion.
A post-race veterinary examination of O'JUNIOR, which trailed the field throughout the race, did not reveal any significant findings. Stable representative for trainer R. Bradshaw was advised that O'JUNIOR must compete in an official trial for what stewards deemed to be an unsatisfactory performance.

P. Hammersley was questioned regarding the riding tactics he adopted on IMAGERY where he allowed the gelding to proceed forward in the early stages and cross to the lead after passing the 800m. P. Hammersley advised that he was instructed to ride the horse with cover, however he was unable to comply with these instructions after being forced to race wide in the early stages so he made the decision to allow IMAGERY to stride forward. P. Hammersley added that IMAGERY will be better suited when it is able to obtain cover in its races. Stewards noted the explanation of P. Hammersley.
S. Seamer was questioned regarding the riding tactics he adopted on USAIN PRINCE where after assuming the lead near the 900m he surrendered that position and USAIN PRINCE raced fiercely at the heels of the leader IMAGERY. S. Seamer explained that approaching the first turn near the 800m USAIN PRINCE began to race ungenerously so he elected to allow IMAGERY to cross to the lead, however USAIN PRINCE did not settle and for some distance he had to restrain to avoid the heels of IMAGERY. Stewards noted the explanation of S. Seamer who agreed that in hindsight it may have been better retaining the lead.

Jockey Munce added he was of the opinion that POWER OF ED was not suited racing in blinkers for the first time and as a consequence he had difficulty getting the colt to settle throughout.

Morris, the rider of PATTIES MATE, was issued with a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 900m he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of SHOOTING SCENE (C. Munce), resulting in SHOOTING SCENE being tightened on to SAVE A BUCK (J. Taylor) and having to be restrained. After M. Morris pleaded not guilty and made further submissions, stewards were of the view that GROWSIR, when being restrained, may have shifted out slightly which contributed to the incident and for that reason the charge was not sustained.
