Race 1 Austereo Handicap (Fillies & Mares Maiden) 1030 Metres
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT : CHICKATILLA (Michael Palmer) began awkwardly.
Rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight, STAR GIGGLE (Matthew Palmer) was held up to the inside of the heels of TABASSI (G. Colless).
Stewards sought an explanation from jockey P. Hammersley in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of NOVA ICE. P. Hammerlsey stated that the mare did not show her customary early speed, however he was able to position NOVA ICE in a trailing position behind the eventual winner, TABASSI. He added that when he attempted to progress forward around TABASSI when TESTA RENAYA (J. Byrne) was improving to his outisde, the mare failed to respond to his riding and he was unable to progress forward. P. Hammersley added that, in his opinion, the overall performance of NOVA ICE was disappointing.
C. Munce reported that MISS KAYDEE showed good early speed, however commenced to tire in the ealry part of the straight and faltered on several occasions near the 200m, and owing to this he did not unduly pressure the filly in the run to the line. A post-race veterinary examination of MISS KAYDEE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer P. Dawson undertook to report to stewards any abnormality that becomes apparent in the days following the race.
A post-race veterinary examination of JAMAIS CONTENTE revealed the mare had a poor post race recovery.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT : As J. Stanley was indisposed, S. Scriven was substituted as the rider of SPOTTED EAGLE.
MITESSA (M. Hellyer) and WHISKY HIGHWAY (G. Colless) were slow to begin.
At the start, SWEET AND VICIOUS (L. Cassidy) jumped outwards at the start and bumped ALL SIGNIFICANT (P. Hammersley) and became unbalanced and shifted in, making contact with SPOTTED EAGLE (S. Scriven). SWEET AND VICOUS was then forced to race in restricted room between ALL SIGNIFICANT, which was taken in slightly by NAVAJOS (J. Byrne), and SPOTTED EAGLE, which shifted out.
NAVAJOS raced wide in the early stages.
Leaving the 700m, ETCHED IN GLASS (A. Spinks), which had a tendency to lay outwards, had to be checked when SPOTTED EAGLE lost ground a short distance after establishing the lead. In the circumstances and considering the racing manners of ETCHED IN GLASS, stewards took no direct action other than to remind S. Scriven, rider of SPOTTED EAGLE, of his obligations under AR137(d). In this incident, ETCHED IN GLASS shifted out, making contact with GENTLE SPIRIT (K. Banks) and became unbalanced and shifted in, resulting in CALL ME PARIS (M. Wood) shifting in and making contact with the running rail when being steadied from the heels of ETCHED IN GLASS. A short distance later, CALL ME PARIS again made contact with the running rail of its own accord.
M. Wood, rider of CALL ME PARIS, reported that his saddle shifted near the 600m, and after being held up for clear running behind SPOTTED EAGLE in the early part of the straight, this placed him at a disadvantage in consolidating clear running between SPOTTED EAGLE and NAVAJOS when it became available near the 100m.
SPOTTED EAGLE shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages. S. Scriven, rider of SPOTTED EAGLE, was advised that he must make greater effort in similar circumstances to keep his mounts on a straight path.
WHISKY HIGHWAY and MASTER OF PUPPETS (D. Browne) raced 3 wide throughout.
K. Banks, rider of GENTLE SPIRIT, reported that when she placed her mount under pressure leaving the 500m the filly commenced to hang out and did so until midway down the home straight. K. Banks added that this placed her at a disadvantage in fully testing GENTLE SPIRIT during that portion of the race.
Stewards sought an explanation from L. Cassidy regarding the performance of SWEET AND VICIOUS. L. Cassidy stated that the filly had trialled fairly in preparation for today's event and was positive in regards to its chances, however he encountered crowding from other runners shortly after the start, and subsequent to this the filly travelled only fairly throughout the event and proved somewhat disappointing in the run to the line. L. Cassidy added that SWEET AND VICIOUS would benefit from the race experience and felt that the filly would be suited to races over 1200m and longer.
D. Browne, rider of MASTER OF PUPPETS, reported that he was obliged to race extremely wide making the first turn and therefore he restrained to a posiiton towards the rear of the field closer to the fence. He added that MASTER PUPPETS raced greenly during the middle part of the race, however finished the race off well over the concluding stages and felt that the horse would take benefit from the race experience.
G. Colless reported that he was instructed to ride WHISKEY HIGHWAY in a forward position and after beginning slowly he rode his mount aggressively in an attempt to comply with his instructions. G. Colless added that he was forced to race extremely wide for the majority of the event and felt, in the circumstances, the performance of WHISKEY HIGHWAY was creditable.

He added that DEB'S PICK refused to settle and laid in during the middle stages of the race which ultimately resulted in it compounding over the concluding stages.
Stewards sought an explanation regarding the performance of BLACK KATANA. G. Colless stated that the horse travelled well in a position behind the leader, however after being briefly held up rounding the home turn, the horse failed to accelerate despite his urgings and proved very disappointing over the concluding stages. Stable representative Mrs J. Aitkenhead could offer no explanation for the horse's performance and expressed her disappointment in BLACK KATANA'S effort. A post-race veterinary examination of BLACK KATAN failed to reveal any significant abnormalities and stewards advised Mrs Aitkenhead that they would contact trainer Mrs V. McLeod in the days following the event to asceratin if any condition had become apparent that may have had a bearing on the horse's performance. Subsequent to this, stewards will consider if any action should be taken in respect of the horse's immediate racing future.

G. Colless added that whilst its performance was disappointing, it was his opinion that the horse's best performances have been on rain affected tracks. Mr L. Birchley concurred G. Colless's comments, and confirmed that the gelding's performs better on rain affected surfaces.
