Stewards Report extract : CAPE SPIRIT (B. Wallace) began awkwardly, causing the rider to become unbalanced. As a result of this incident, the saddle on that runner shifted forward, which placed him at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event.
KING AMADEO (K. Forrester) shifted out at the start and made contact with MAKYEAH (P. Hammersley).
In the early stages ZABELO (S. Scriven) was inclined to lay out, which resulted in CAPE SPIRIT being obliged to race extremely wide for some distance.
Stewards sought an explanation from trainer L. Tipper in regards to the improved performance of ALL THE GIRLS GOLD. Ms Tipper stated that following the mare's last start at the Sunshine Coast, jockey Wiggins indicated to her that in his opinion the mare would be better suited over staying distances and also recommended the addition of blinkers, which the mare raced in for the first time today. Ms Tipper also advised stewards that in her opinion the soft surface today may have suited the mare considering the horse is bred to handle the wet. Stewards noted the explanation.

Stewards Report extract : TOMBOY (E. Kehoe) overraced at the heels of O'REILLY'S GOLD (J. Byrne) for some distance approaching and rounding the first turn.
Near the 600m CROISADE (R. Wiggins) commenced to overrace and had to be steadied from the heels of SILVER FLUTE (M. Radecker). CROISADE then shifted out taking TOMBOY wider on the track. RUBYELSIE (M. Hellyer), which was trailing, had to be steadied and lost ground when CROISADE shifted out. Stewards Report extract : A short distance after the start MAN FROM OZ (J. Taylor) and MISS ASTANA (A. Spinks) were tightened for room between CHE SARA SARA (C. Munce), which shifted in, and SHAMANIN (M. Hellyer), which shifted outwards. In this incident MISS ASTANA lost its rightful position.
BLITZED (A. Best) was inclined to lay in rounding the home turn and when tested with the whip near the 200m shifted out abruptly.

Munce) became fractious and broke through the barriers and galloped for a considerable distance before being recaptured. PENNY LOUISE was ordered a late withdrawal at 2.10 p.m. by order of the stewards. Trainer R. Stephenson was advised that he must obtain a further barrier certificate for PENNY LOUISE prior to its next start.

Stewards Report extract : Connections advised that IF IT CAN IT WILL will be ridden more prominently today if circumstances permit. IF IT CAN IT WILL raced in a rearward position.
Trainer S. O'Dea advised that if circumstances permit UMANOVA will be ridden in a forward position today as it is stepping up in distance and as it has drawn the inside barrier.
IF IT CAN IT WILL (L. Cassidy) reared as the start was effected and lost ground. Trainer K. Schweida was advised that a warning was being placed on the racing manners of IF IT CAN IT WILL.
BIG KEN THE CELT (G. Colless) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
When the pace steadied approaching the 1100m BILLY AUCASH (R. Wiggins), HONOURED (S. Seamer), PLAYACTION (A. Spinks), OMNIA MUNDA MUNDIS (J. Taylor) and CASTLE EXPRESS (B. El-Issa) all overraced for some distance.
Near the 600m PLAYACTION shifted out around the heels of HONOURED to improve and in doing so inconvenienced KATE'S MESSAGE (A. Butler).
Leaving the 500m DIADEM TRIST (B. Wallace) improved on to the heels of UMANOVA (J. Bowditch) and had to be steadied.
On return to scale A. Spinks reported that PLAYACTION did not handle today's rain-affected surface when he asked the colt to improve from the 700m.
Stewards sought an explanation from G. Colless in regards to the seemingly disappointing performance of BIG KEN THE CELT. G. Colless stated that the horse began well and found the lead quite easily and enjoyed a nice run throughout the race, however passing the 600m BIG KEN THE CELT was under pressure and failed to respond to his riding thereafter. G. Colless advised stewards that he felt BIG KEN THE CELT did not appreciate the soft surface today and was also of the view that the horse did not run out the 1600m. Trainer L. Birchley agreed with the explanation provided by jockey Colless and advised stewards that he would now give consideration to sending the horse for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of BIG KEN THE CELT failed to reveal any abnormalities and a swab sample was taken.
L. Cassidy and trainer K. Schweida were afforded the opportunity of explaining the poor performance of IF IT CAN IT WILL. L. Cassidy explained that the horse reared as the start was effected and lost ground which resulted in him settling in a rearward position, which was in conflict with the instructions issued. L. Cassidy added that the pattern of the race severely disadvantaged IF IT CAN IT WILL and attributed the horse's performance to its waywardness at the start which led to it settling in a rearward position in a slowly run race. Trainer K. Schweida advised that he intends continuing with the gelding's preparation and indicated that he may remove the blinkers.
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice A. Butler in regards to the poor performance of KATE'S MESSAGE. A. Butler advised that he was instructed to ride the filly in a rearward position and due to it being one-paced make a run from the 600m. Apprentice Butler explained that the pace of the race during the middle stages was slow and as a result he chose to make a run from passing the 700m, however he was forced extremely wide and whilst this may have had an effect on the horse's chances he was nonetheless disappointed with the filly's finishing effort.

El-Issa explained that he settled at the rear of the field to comply with instructions, however the gelding overraced in this position and was not suited to the slow tempo and worked to the line fairly in the home straight. B. El-Issa added that in his view CASTLE EXPRESS would be better suited ridden in a forward position. Trainer K. Schweida reported that following CASTLE EXPRESS's return to his stables it was found to be exhibiting signs of heat stress and he undertook to report to stewards the condition of the horse in the coming days, including the results of any veterinary tests.
