Stewards Report extract : Trainer P. Nolan reported that subsequent to FANTASTIC BLUE'S last start at Eagle Farm on 27 November, the gelding subsequently pulled up with bruised heels which, in his opinion, may have had an effect on its performance.
After being slow to begin, DAMNATION (N. Thomas) was further hampered shortly after the start by LA BELLA LUISA (M. Hellyer), which shifted out.
Approaching and passing the 1000m, JOYEUX JOY (B. El-Issa) raced ungenerously and proved difficult to ride.
Near the 500m, LA BELLA LUISA shifted out around the heels of JOYEUX JOY and bumped BEARHART GOLD (J. Holder), which resulted in BEARHART GOLD being taken wider on the track.
Shortly after entering the home straight, UNCONQUERABLE (R. Wiggins) was inconvenienced when tightened for room between FANTASTIC BLUE and ENSOSTA TSZYU (S. Galloway), which shifted out. UNCONQUERABLE was then obliged to alter course to the inside of ENCOSTA TSZYU to improve.
After passing the 100m, ENCOSTA TSZYU had to be steadied off the heels of CHARTER BOAT when taken in by FANTASTIC BLUE (T. Bell), which was also taken in by JOYEUX JOY. B. El-Issa, rider of JOYEUX JOY, was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.
S. Seamer reported that the performance of FANTASTIC FORCE indicated to him that the horse is now looking for further distance in its races at this stage of its preparation.
Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce regarding the performance of COOL EDITION. C. Munce explained that the mare settled further back in the field than he would have liked, however travelled comfortably until after entering the home straight and failed to quicken under his riding. C. Munce added that the mare was disappointing over the final 100m of the race. A post race veterinary examination of COOL EDITION revealed soreness to the near fore fetlock.

M. Cahill was questioned regarding the performance of WONDERFUL YOU. M. Cahill explained that the gelding was racing in blinkers for the first time today and he was instructed to settle in a handy position if possible with cover. He stated that despite his urgings shortly after the start, WONDERFUL YOU could not muster any speed, and after passing the 8900m rather than ride the horse along, he elected to allow it to settle where it was travelling comfortably. M. Cahill further added WONDERFUL YOU finished the race off strongly and that if he hadn't been obliged to alter course around the heels of the tiring IDEAL near the 100m, the gelding, in his opinion, may have finished in the placings.

MILITARY GRACE (C. Munce) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with the off-side barrier partition, and then continued to shift inwards, making contact with FLYING JET. MILITARY GRACE then shifted out, tightening the running of MERRYANNA (M. Cahill).
MERRYANNA commenced to buck near the 900m, dislodging M. Cahill. Trainer M. Thexton was advised that MERRYANNA would be required to trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to its next race start. M. Cahill was examined by the club's doctor and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.
Near the 600m, MIDNIGHT MINX (G. Colless) improved up on the heels of MILITARY GRACE and when being restrained shifted out and had to be steadied from the heels of CANNY ROSE (P. Hammersley).

Stewards Report extract : Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice M. Hellyer, rider of SOILED, regarding the reason for him shifting wider on the track rounding the home turn, which enabled JAZZ HEART (J. Byrne) to improve to his inside. Apprentice Hellyer explained that SOILED had a tendency to hang out after passing the 600m and despite his efforts it shifted wider on the track rounding the home turn. J. Byrne, rider of JAZZ HEART, stated that when travelling behind SOILED approaching the home turn, it was apparent to him that the horse had its head on the side and was laying outwards. For this reason he shifted to the inside in the hope that a run would present itself. After viewing the patrol films, stewards were satisfied with the explanations tendered.
When asked to explain the performance of PEPPERWOOD, G. Colless stated that the gelding was not suited to the slow tempo in the early and middle stages and from the wider barrier was unable to obtain cover and was forced to race wide throughout. He added that PEPPERWOOD is best suited in races where it was able to sprint in the straight off a fast race tempo, which was the case when successful at its last start. A post race veterinary examination of PEPPERWOOD failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

After the running of Race 6, a delegation of riders approached stewards with concerns regarding visibility during the running of this race. Stewards then delayed the running of Race 7. Following the continuation of heavy rain, stewards, in the company of senior riders, inspected the track surface, which revealed a considerable amount of surface water in the home straight. In the interests of safety, stewards abandoned the remainder of the meeting.
