Bowditch explained that the horse did not show the necessary pace to take up a forward position, and for a short distance leaving the 700m was the only time the horse travelled well. He added that BIGGLES did not respond to his riding over the concluding stages and to finish the race off. Trainer N. Doyle was at a loss to explain the poor performance and undertook to report to stewards any abnormality that becomes apparent that may have had a bearing on today's performance. A post race veterinary examination of BIGGLES failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Subsequently, despite being ridden aggressively in the early stages, HUMMA was unable to take up a forward position.

A short distance after the start, SHUFFLE THE CASH (M. Wood) and BODY DOUBLE (J. Holder) were tightened for room between TRAUMA (T. Bell) and MAJESTIC SIGHT (M. Palmer), which shifted in slightly.

After passing the 600m, SHUFFLE THE CASH had to be steadied to avoid the heels of the tiring MAJESTIC SIGHT. SHUFFLE THE CASH then shifted to the inside of MAJESTIC SIGHT in order to obtain clear running.

For some distance approaching the 300m, LYNCEAN ACADEMY (R. Wiggins) was disappointed for clear running between TRAUMA and SHOOTING SCENE (L. Cassidy).

Approaching the finish line, ROCKDALE (L. Rolls) had to be eased to avoid the heels of TRAUMA (T. Bell), which shifted in which not clear. T. Bell, rider of TRAUMA, was issued with a severe reprimand and reminded of his obligations to straighten his mounts sooner than he did on this occasion.

SIONG TEE (S. Seamer) and HUMMA (M. Hellyer) raced wide throughout the race.

MAJESTIC SIGHT (M. Palmer) hung in for a major part of the race and compounded badly from the 600m. A post race veterinary examination of MAJESTIC SIGHT failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer D. Scanes was advised that under AR50 the nomination of MAJESTIC SIGHT will now be refused for what stewards deemed to be an unsatisfactory performance.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          M. Hellyer advised that after being forced to race wide on HUMMA, the gelding tired over the concluding stages. A post race veterinary examination of HUMMA failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

When questioned, L. Cassidy explained that SHOOTING SCENE did not seem comfortable on today's firm surface. A post race veterinary examination of SHOOTING SCENE revealed the gelding to have a slower than normal recovery rate.

Palmer, rider of PROMONTORY, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. MONASHEE WARRIOR continued to overrace in the middle stages.

Near the 200m, BEOWOLF (J. TENFOLD (L. Rolls) and BEOWOLF (J. Kropp) raced 3 wide throughout.

PENNY LOUISE (C. Munce) was forced to race 4 wide for a major part of the race.

Stewards sought an explanation from J. Taylor regarding the disappointing performance of SYMPOSIUM. J. Taylor explained that the gelding did not travel comfortably in the early and middle stages of the race, and when placed under pressure in the home straight, did not sprint as expected. He further added that SYMPOSIUM may not have appreciated racing to the inside of other runners. A post race veterinary examination of SYMPOSIUM failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

When questioned regarding the performance of PENNY LOUISE, C. Munce explained that the mare, after being caught 4 wide, did not have the necessary pace to take up a forward position and as a result he was unable to gain a position closer to the rail.

FIORI lost its off for plate running.

CASH 'N' STYLE (R. Jockey D. Browne reported that CAVALIERED hung out for a major part of the race and when placed under pressure shortly after straightening the gelding did not feel comfortable in its action and as a result he eased CAVALIERED out of the race. A post race veterinary examination of CAVALIERED revealed the gelding to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer R. Heathcote was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for the gelding prior to its next race start.

Subsequently, C. Munce declined to proceed.

Bowditch) shifted out to avoid the heels of DAUNTING LAD (S. Seamer), which resulted in CHANGING EYES (J. Holder) being forced wider on the track.

Rounding the home turn, GUNDY SON shifted out and brushed CASHOLET (C. GUNDY SON shifted out when placed under pressure over the final 300m. P. Hammersley, rider of GUNDY SON, was advised in similar circumstances that he would be expected to make greater effort in future to stop riding and straighten his mounts.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          CHANGING EYES raced wide throughout.

Wood reported that when he placed THE SIXTIES under pressure in the home straight, the gelding was inclined to hang out and did not feel comfortable in its action. A post race veterinary examination of THE SIXTIES revealed the gelding to be exhibiting signs that it had jarred up on today's firm surface.

Wood and trainer S. Ryan regarding the performance of CARIAD. Apprentice Wood explained that after travelling a short distance he attempted to restrain his mount to a rearward position, as is its normal racing pattern, and the mare resented this and he was unable to settle CARIAD, adding that it was inclined to hang out for a major part of the race, placing him at a distinct disadvantage. It was his opinion that CARIAD may have got its tongue over the bit. Trainer S. Ryan was advised that CARIAD must compete in an official trial prior to racing again, and indicated to stewards that the mare would now be sent for a short break, and that in its next preparation he would experiment with the addition of a tongue-tie on the mare. A post race veterinary examination of CARIAD failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Rolls, rider of BUDABAR, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that he permitted his mount to shift in approaching the 1000m when insufficiently clear of BLACKWOODS CHOICE (M. Wood), resulting in that gelding having to be checked, and ACADEMY MAGIC, which was following also having to be checked. L. Rolls was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 17 February and to expire at midnight, 25 February. A short distance later, BUDABAR had to be steadied from the heels of ESSINGTON (C. Munce) when that runner shifted out slightly.
