STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT : Near the 1000m, TWO TONE (C. Munce) shifted out off the heels of AL MAZAYA (D. Browne) and made contact with UNCONQUERABLE (L. Cassidy), forcing that runner wider on the track. UNCONQUERABLE then raced 3 wide for the remainder of the race. C. Munce, rider of TWO TONE, was issued with a reprimand and advised that in similar circumstances he must make greater efforts to restrain his mount before shifting out.
Approaching the 1200m, NEWLY ELECTED (G. Colless), when overracing, shifted out and forced HAZELDON wider on the track.
For a short distance after passing the 600m, CATALLION (S. Galloway) was held up and unable to improve when awkwardly placed at the heels of BEARHART GOLD (K. Fuji), which had commenced to weaken.
Stewards sought an explanation from G. Colless regarding the disappointing performance of NEWLY ELECTED. He explained that he settled the gelding at the rear of the field and after travelling a short distance he elected to shift to a trailing position behind AL MAZAYA (D. Browne). He added that NEWLY ELECTED travelled well in running however failed to respond to his riding shortly after entering the home straight and was disappointing. He added that NEWLY ELECTED did not feel comfortable in its action over the final 100m. Trainer B. Guy advised that he would now send NEWLY ELECTED for a spell. A post race veterinary examination of NEWLY ELECTED failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
BEARHART GOLD bled during the event. Trainer B. Herne was advised that the gelding would be barred for a period of 3 months.
Following this race the track rating was downgraded Dead 4.

On arrival at the barriers, at the request of jockey S. Seamer, SECRET BREEZE was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

D. Missen, rider of POP'S CHOICE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1100m he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of MAID OF FALVELON, which was tightened and taken in on to MISS BRADBURY (C. Munce), which in turn was also taken inwards on to MALLARD (J. Byrne), which was tightened and made heavy contact with the hind quarters of SHE'S CANDY (C. Whiteley), turning that horse outwards, resulting in MISS BRADBURY having to be checked. As a result of the interference sustained by MISS BRADBURY, HEATHEN CHEMISTRY (J. Wood), which was following, also had to be checked. D. Missen was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 20 February and to expire at midnight, 2 March.
C. Munce, rider of MISS BRADBURY, advised that following the filly being checked near the 1100m, MISS BRADBURY never travelled well from that point and, in his opinion, failed to handle today's rain affected track.
For some distance approaching and passing the 700m, MAID OF FALVELON (M. Speers) brushed MALLARD on a number of occasions.
MALLARD (J. Byrne) made the home turn awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with MAID OF FALVELON, forcing that runner wider on the track.
Approaching the 300m, MAID OF FALVELON shifted in under pressure and made heavy contact with MALLARD.
Near the 200m, M. Speers, rider of MAID OF FALVELON, dropped his whip.
Near the 100m, HEATHEN CHEMISTRY (J. Wood) was inconvenienced by MAID OF FALVELON, which was taken out by FINN CLASS (M. Hellyer), which shifted out under pressure. M. Hellyer, rider of FINN CLASS, was advised to exercise more care and make a greater effort to straighten his mounts in similar circumstances in future.
MAID OF FALVELON raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from J. Byrne regarding the performance of MALLARD. He stated that the filly was tightened for room near the 1100m and was inclined to race greenly for a major part of the race, and that after being bumped heavily shortly after straightening by MAID OF FALVELON, the filly failed to finish the race off as he expected.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT : GALLANT HAWK was declared a late scratching at 3.42 pm, and TRISKELE at 3.45 pm following applications by their trainers due to the down grading of the track to Slow 7.
FLASH THE ROCK (K. Fuji) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1000m, SKY TRAVELLER (J. Bowditch) had to be steadied when tightened for room by FALLS CREEK (G. Colless), which shifted in when not quite clear. G. Colless, rider of FALLS CREEK, was advised to provide greater clearance to his fellow riders in similar circumstances in future.
When questioned, J. Byrne stated that VAARWEL did not feel comfortable on the rain affected track and that when placed under pressure in the straight, it did not sprint as expected and proved disappointing on the rain-affected track.
Stewards questioned J. Bowditch regarding the tactics adopted on SKY TRAVELLER in the early stages. Of particular concern to the stewards was his apparent lack of vigour in the early stages from an inside barrier to take up a forward position, which is consistent with SKY TRAVELLER'S normal racing pattern. Preliminary investigations of the betting activity surrounding the race was also of concern to stewards and in view of this the inquiry was adjourned to enable further investigations to be completed.
After taking evidence from J. Bowditch and trainer G. Heinrich, the matter was adjourned to enable stewards to further investigate betting on the event.
When questioned regarding the performance of DUBBUS, A. Spinks stated that the gelding failed to handle today's rain affected track. A post race veterinary examination of DUBBUS failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
