Wharton, rider of CRAIGLEA ROMEO, made application to stewards to have the gelding declared a non-runner on the basis that he had been denied a fair start. K. Wharton's grounds for the application related to the nearside barrier gate springing back after the start was effected, making heavy contact with his horse's head area. After taking evidence from the starter Mr W. Shuck, who indicated that the adjoining barrier stall in which TAX EVADER was drawn was closed after it was damaged and after viewing the film and confirming K. Wharton's version, stewards, acting under the powers of AR. 134A, declared CRAIGLEA ROMEO a non-runner as it had been denied a fair start.

On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on TAX EVADER and CRAIGLEA ROMEO be refunded, with deductions of 20 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and place tickets on bets placed prior to 12.01 p.m. to apply, and deductions of 6 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and 7 cents in the dollar on the face value of place tickets to apply to bets placed after 12.01 p.m.

The offside barrier gate of TRUE BLITZ sprung back marginally as the start was effected.

BLACK BANNER (J. Holder) was slow to begin.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          BLACK BANNER raced wide throughout.

Near the 1100m CRAIGLEA ROMEO (K. Wharton) shifted in of its own accord and made contact with the running rail. CRAIGLEA ROMEO then became unbalanced and shifted out and bumped TRUE BLITZ.

Heathcote advised that his intentions are to race HUMMA (L. Cassidy) in a forward position if possible. HUMMA settled in a mid-field position.

ROCKDALE (L. Rolls) began awkwardly and shifted in tightening the running of TUSCANY VIEW (B. El-Issa) and HUMMA (L. Cassidy).

A short distance after the start BELL ACADEMY (M. Speers) commenced to buck and continued to do so until the 1700m and took no competitive part in the race. When BELL ACADEMY commenced to buck, HUMMA, which was trailing that horse, had to be checked when it lost ground and was taken wider on the track. ATTALLUS (J. Taylor), which was also trailing, had to be checked from the heels of BELL ACADEMY near the 1800m. Trainer B. Herne was advised that BELL ACADEMY must trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to its next start.

Near the 1000m ATTALLUS improved up on to the heels of ROYAL REIGN (M. Wood) and had to be steadied.

A post-race veterinary examination of TUSCANY VIEW revealed the gelding to be lame in the near fore fetlock.

Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of DRUMSHANBO. C. Munce stated that the pace in the race suited his mount, until near the 700m when it slackened and for this reason he decided to improve from that point forward. Jockey Munce added that when he asked DRUMSHANBO for an effort approaching the home turn the gelding was immediately under pressure and failed to finish the race off as expected. He further added that the horse may be feeling the effects of its recent campaign. Trainer M. Nolan advised that the gelding would now be sent for a spell.

Following the running of this race the track was upgraded to GOOD 3 retrospective to Race 2.

Stewart).

Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice T. Bell and trainer's representative Mr E. Petrie as to the reasons for TRAUMA settling in a rearward position, which is in contrast to is normal racing pattern. Apprentice T. Bell stated that TRAUMA began only fairly and suffered interference at the start when HAZELDON (L. Cassidy) shifted out and bumped TRAUMA. Apprentice Bell added that whilst he then had to steady from the heels of YUMMY, TRAUMA did not muster speed as expected and felt this may have been due to the horse coming back in distance. Mr Petrie advised that he had instructed apprentice Bell to position the horse close to the lead, however accepted apprentice Bell's explanation for the gelding settling back in the field after viewing the stewards' patrol footage.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          S. Galloway, the rider of LADY SELENE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 1100m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of BELLETRIST (Michael Palmer) resulting in that horse being taken in on to MISSY WINDY WEEPU (J. Taylor), which had to be checked when tightened for room to the inside of BELLETRIST. S. Galloway's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday, 5 March, and expire at midnight on Wednesday, 16 March 2011.

Bogenhuber, the rider of HULL CITY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 1100m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of MISSY WINDY WEEPU, resulting in that horse having to be checked to avoid the heels of HULL CITY. Apprentice Bogenhuber's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday, 5 March, and expire at midnight on Thursday, 17 March 2011.

Wood was stood down by the Club's doctor, J. Bowditch was substituted as the rider of OUR SCOOBY DOO when no other apprentice was available.

DANEOMITE (L. Rolls) jumped away awkwardly and contacted SILENT MOVIE (S. Seamer).

I'M RUTHLESS (E. Wilkinson) also jumped a little awkwardly, shifted out and brushed OUR SCOOBY DOO (J. Bowditch), which was taken out on to BANN RUBY (Michael Palmer).

Passing the 1000m EASY ROCKER (S. Bogenhuber) was tightened for room to the inside of SILENT MOVIE, which was inclined to lay in after being cramped for room by I'M RUTHLESS, which was also racing in restricted room to the inside of JOINT CHIEFS (M. Wood). Stewards were of the view that the racing manners of SILENT MOVIE contributed to this incident, however advised apprentice M. Wood to afford fellow riders sufficient racing room to his inside in future.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          BANN RUBY raced wide throughout.

SILENT MOVIE was again tightened for room approaching the 800m by I'M RUTHLESS which again was racing tight to the inside of JOINT CHIEFS.

Approaching the 300m EASY ROCKER was hampered by I'M RUTHLESS, which shifted out under pressure.

CAT EYES (M. Hellyer) shifted out under pressure over the final 200m.

DRUM RUN (B. Stewards sought an explanation from B. El-Issa regarding his tactics on TAFEER in the middle stages where the horse led by a considerable distance and set a fast tempo. B. El-Issa explained that after being hampered shortly after the start he rode the mare forward and after obtaining the lead near the 1100m he was unable to restrain TAFEER when the mare overraced. B. El-Issa added that after attempting to restrain TAFEER for some distance in the middle stages he allowed the mare to stride as he felt his efforts to restrain TAFEER would be detrimental to the horse's capacity to finish the race off. Trainer K. Schweida explained that TAFEER in its most recent starts has had a tendency to overrace and resent being restrained in its races. Mr Schweida advised stewards that he will now remove the blinkers and step the horse back in distance.A post-race veterinary examination of TAFEER revealed the mare had a laceration inside the offside stifle. Mr Schweida was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for TAFEER prior to its next start.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          D. Green, the rider of JOYEUX JOY, was issued with reprimands for raising his whip arm above shoulder height (AR. 137A(4)(b)) and for using the whip in a forehand manner in consecutive strides (AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii)).
