Race 1 TERRY NEALE MEMORIAL HANDICAP (QTIS 3 YEAR OLD MAIDEN) 1200 METRES
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT : A. Spinks was dislodged from DANCING AL during the preliminary. DANCING AL was examined by the veterinary surgeon upon arrival at the barriers and cleared to race. A. Spinks was cleared by the ambulance officers to fulfil his engagement.
The start was delayed when I'LLBETRICKED became fractious in the barriers. As a result, both I'LLBETRICKED and PSYCLONE MISS (C. Munce), which was in the adjoining stall, were examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race. Trainer D. Lawlor was advised that a warning would be placed on I'LLBETRICKED regarding its barrier manners.
PICACELEB (M. Speers) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1000m, STIGORI (P. Hammersley), when being restrained to obtain a position closer to the fence, became awkward on the heels of DANCING AL (A. Spinks) and as a result was steadied.
After passing the 900m when the pace steadied, I'LLBETRICKED commenced to overrace and had to be restrained to avoid the heels of PICCOLO DYNASTY.
Approaching the 500m, PSYCLONE MISS (C. Munce) shifted out around the heels of DANCING AL to improve, which resulted in STIGORI being taken wider on the track.
LITTLE SQUIRREL (N. Yamada) hung in when placed under pressure in the early part of the straight.

Near the 800m, CICERAO MOUNTAIN, when being restrained, commenced to hang out and raced greenly for the remainder of the race and proved difficult to ride. Trainer C. O'Neill was advised that the gelding would be required to perform satisfactorily in an official trial prior to its next race start.
IVERNIAN (J. Letherby) trailed the field throughout and took no competitive part in the race. A post race veterinary examination of IVERNIAN failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer K. Bennett was advised that IVERNIAN would be barred from racing at TAB meetings until the gelding established competitive form at country meetings.
M. Gray, rider of DENOUEMENT, was fined $200 for using his whip more than 5 times in a forehand manner prior to the 100m.
Following this race, the track rating was upgraded to Dead 4.

When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of PRESIDENT, L. Cassidy explained that the horse was not suited by the slow tempo in the middle stages and had difficulty making ground over the latter part of the race. He added that the horse was also inclined to lay in in the run to the finish.
When asked to explain the performance of AI JO, rider K. Yoshida stated that he was forced to race 3 wide without cover for a major part of the race and, in his opinion, this contributed to the mare weakening over the final 400m. K. Yoshida further added that, in his opinion, AI JO has come to the end of its current preparation. Trainer R. Macrae agreed with jockey Yoshida's assessment and confirmed that it would be his intention to send AI JO for a spell. A post race veterinary examination of AI JO revealed a minor laceration to the near fore canon.
G. Colless, rider of KID TYCOON, which performed below expectations, explained that the gelding travelled well outside the leader, DAPPER, however when placed under pressure approaching the home turn, the gelding failing to respond to his riding and proved disappointing in the home straight.
Trainer T. Crane was questioned regarding the improved performance of ROCKWEST today. Mr Crane explained that at its most recent start the mare raced extremely wide and he was not disappointed with its performance on that day. He added that the mare had worked well in preparation for today's race and he was confident of a forward showing.

Ashton) hung out despite the efforts of its rider, resulting in LUCASAM having to be checked to avoid that runner's heels. Trainer R. Mackay was advised that a warning was being placed on LASS EE regarding its racing manners.

L. Cassidy added that although his mount was checked near the 500m, from that point LUCASAM did not respond to his riding and was disappointing. Trainer R. Heathcote explained that LUCASAM had trailed well recently and he was confident of the gelding's chances. Mr Heathcote undertook to report to stewards any abnormality that becomes apparent that may have had a bearing on today's performance after having further tests carried out on the horse. A swab sample was taken from LUCASAM.
