Race 1: Tacoma Plumbing & Drainage Maiden H'cap - 1200m
Stewards Report Extract : OH SUNDAY (A. Spinks) shifted out at the start, making contact with KING ECHELON (S. Arnold).
Near the 200m, the tiring OH SUNDAY (A. Spinks) was steadied when tightened for room between KING ECHELON and UNFASHIONABLE (M. Palmer), both of which shifted ground.
Stewards questioned apprentice S. Arnold, rider of KING ECHELON, regarding the tactics adopted on that gelding. Apprentice Arnold stated that he had been instructed to obtain cover and if the horse began well to take up a position just behind the leader if possible. Stewards sought an explanation why, after beginning well, he did not pressure the gelding in an attempt to obtain a forward position closer to the rail when an opportunity appeared open to him to do so. Apprentice Arnold explained that, in his opinion, the horse did not appreciate the heavy track conditions, and as KING ECHELON, in his opinion, was not travelling well near the 900m, he elected to take hold of his mount in an attempt to obtain cover. S. Arnold further stated that after then receiving a bump shortly after the 900m from OH SUNDAY, which had a tendency to overrace to the inside, he was obliged to race 4 wide for the remainder of the event. Stewards advised apprentice Arnold that, in their opinion, he had erred during the early stages in failing to show initiative and make a decision early as to whether to ride vigorously on KING ECHELON to secure a forward position closer to the rail or to take hold and obtain cover. Stewards were of the view that given the circumstances, and apprentice Arnold's relative inexperience, no further action should be taken.
A post-race veterinary examination of OMBRA GIRL revealed the mare to be suffering from the thumps. Trainer S. Thomas was advised he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for the mare prior to its next race start.
Due to continuing rain prior to and during this event, the track rating was downgraded to Heavy 10 following this race.

Stewards Report Extract : LISSOME LASS (S. Galloway) and BOOM SAGA (C. Priest) were slow to begin.
Leaving the 800m, WARANGA (R. Hancock) had to be steadied when racing to the outside of LISSOME LASS (S. Galloway) and to the inside of DAWN RETURN (O. Turpin), which shifted in. As a result, BOOM SAGA, which was following, also had to be steadied.
Near the 600m, WARANGA shifted out to improve and in doing so forced RIGHT BID (M. Radecker) wider on the track.
Rounding the home turn, O'BRO (J. Taylor) was held up on the heels of the tiring PITUISI (D. Griffin) and had to be steadied near the 400m.
DAWN RETURN lost its off hind plate in running.
A post-race veterinary examination of PITUISI, which tailed off, revealed the filly to be lame near hind leg. Trainer P. Lavin was advised that he would be require to provide a veterinary clearance for PITUISI prior to its next race start.

Stewards Report Extract : BLOODHOUND (R. Hancock) and UNIVERSAL SEVENS (J. Bowditch) were slow to begin.
Near the 1300m, LATCHFORD STAR (D. Griffin) had to be steadied when racing between BOSSIE BOY (J. Holder) and KENNY'S MAGIC (K. Gates), which when overracing at the heels of INCANDESCENT (P. Hammersley), shifted out. KENNY'S MAGIC continued to overrace until approaching the 600m.
Stewards questioned jockey T. O'Hara regarding the performance of JAMESON AICH, which was below market expectations. Jockey O'Hara stated that the horse was under pressure from the 800m and proved disappointing over the concluding stages. Trainer J. Wehlow stated that he was disappointed with the performance and could offer no tangible explanation other than the horse may not have handled today's Heavy 10 surface as opposed to a Heavy 8 surface at its most recent start. Mr Wehlow undertook to report to stewards any abnormality which may come to light which may have had some bearing on the performance.
When questioned regarding the performance of BOSSIE BOY, which tailed off, jockey J. Holder stated at no stage did the horse travel well, and, in his opinion, was making an abnormal respiratory noise over the concluding stages. Trainer R. Bradshaw was at a loss to explain the performance, however added that he may reconsider the horse's current preparation and also experiment with possible gear changes. A post-race veterinary examination of BOSSIE BOY failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Stewards Report Extract : A pre-race veterinary examination of TWO TIMES A LADY at the request of the trainer cleared the filly to take its place in the field.
MACUSHNA (A. Erhart) was tightened for room at the start between REHNQUIST (P. Hammersley) and HOLD ON TIGER (J. Hoopert), which shifted out.
MACUSHNA, which had a tendency to overrace in the early stages, had to be steadied when tightened for room to the inside of IGLESIA GRACE (J. Taylor), which shifted in. Both IGLESIA GRACE and MACUSHNA continued to overrace for a short distance following this incident.
VAGUELY IRISH (C. Kearney) and LIBERTY'S MAGIC (J. Holder) both overraced during the early stages, and at a point near the 1000m shifted wider on the track to avoid heels and raced wide from that point onwards.
Rounding the home turn MACUSHNA, which was held up at the heels of the tiring MORNING AFTER (M. Radecker), was forced to steady and shift out to obtain clear running and in doing so tightened MORINGA'S SUNDANCE (J. Bowditch) on the hind quarters of VAGUELY IRISH, causing MORINGA'S SUNDANCE to be steadied.
Near the 200m, MACUSHNA and IGLESIA GRACE were both hampered and forced wider on the track when racing to the outside of CRAZY WAYS (D. Griffin), which was taken out by REHNQUIST (P. Hammersley), which shifted out under pressure.
CRAZY WAYS raced wide throughout.
A post-race veterinary examination of MAGIC OPTION revealed the gelding to be suffering from heat stress. A veterinary clearance for MAGIC OPTION would be required prior to its next race start.

Stewards Report Extract : The start of this race was delayed when VELVET KNIGHT kicked and got its leg through the back gates. VELVET KNIGHT was examined by the veterinary surgeon and subsequently declared a late scratching at 3.25 pm on veterinary advice Subsequent to the event all monies invested on VELVET KNIGHT were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 12 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 15 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets. Connections of VELVET KNIGHT, which was subsequently found to have lacerations to both hind legs and was lame in the off hind leg, were advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to its next race start.
M. Hughes, rider of ABBAJAZZ, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 900m he failed to stop riding and straighten his mount, which was inclined to shift in at that stage, causing WESTERN SHADOW (D. Griffin) to be tightened for room and forced in on to the hind quarters of LILLAVARDEE (I. Coombes), which resulted in LILLAVARDEE being turned outwards, forcing WESTERN SHADOW to be tightened back across the heels of ABBAJAZZ. M. Hughes was suspended from riding in races for a period 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 3 April and to expire at midnight, 14 April.

She stated the fact that the horse was having its first start back from a spell on a heavy track over 1200m may have had a detrimental effect on its performance. Trainer K. Hill agreed with Miss Gill's comments and stewards noted the explanation.
When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of PRIDE OF POLAND, trainer B. Thornton stated that the addition of blinkers to the horse's gear today, along with racing on a rain-affected track, which in his opinion the horse appreciates, were contributing factors and he had expected a forward showing. Mr Thornton added it was his intention to step the PRIDE OF POLAND up to races over longer distances. The explanation was noted.

He stated that despite this, DESEMAY finished the race off well, and he was of the opinion that the horse would be more suited to races over longer distances where the mare would be able to obtain a more forward position with less early speed in the race and perhaps be able to settle in its races.
