STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT : Trainer T. Williams was fined $100 under AR. 140B for failing to notify a gear change for LORD ALISTAIR by the prescribed time. A public announcement was made to the effect that LORD ALISTAIR would be wearing a tongue tie for the first time.
TORNADOES (N. Thomas) began awkwardly.
KENNY'S MAGIC (K. Gates) began awkwardly and shifted in, becoming awkward at the heels of TORNADOES and having to be steadied.
Leaving the 800m LORD ALISTAIR (C. Munce) had to be steadied off the heels of TORNADOES after hanging in.
TRICKIN (B. Thomson) became unbalanced near the 500m.
Near the 150m SHOW RULER (M. Cahill) shifted in and away from TORNADOES which shifted in under pressure.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of SHOW RULER, jockey M. Cahill stated that after travelling well in the early and middle stages the gelding failed to respond to his riding in the straight and in his opinion was disappointing. Trainer T. Miller stated that whilst he was a little disappointed with the horse's performance today, he felt that the quick back-up from last week may have had a telling effect on the horse's performance today. A post-race veterinary examination of SHOW RULER revealed the presence of a slight laceration to its near hind leg.

The start was delayed slightly when, at the request of its rider, LAPETUS (A. Spinks) was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

STALWART EMMA (C. Priest), which was slow to begin, shifted in making contact with the hind quarters of LAPETUS.
OVER FRIENDLY (E. Wilkinson) and HI JO SILVER (M. Cahill) made contact on jumping away as a result of both horses shifting ground.

The start was delayed when ROLLING HEIGHTS (A. Spinks) proved difficult to load. Trainer T. Cotsiopoulos was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse's barrier manners.
FIBRE KING (O. Turpin) began awkwardly and shortly after the start, when being steadied, became unbalanced and lost ground.
On jumping away SHAH RUKH (D. Tanti) shifted out, making contact with the outside barrier gate, causing D. Tanti to became unbalanced.

Stewards inquired into an incident near the 800m where LAUGHING CRUSADER (C. Priest) clipped the heels of O'REILLY'S GOLD (D. Griffin) and blundered. It was established that near the 800m D. Griffin, the rider of O'REILLY'S GOLD, which was racing in a four-wide position, elected to go forward and once assuming the lead restrained his mount slightly resulting in LAUGHING CRUSADER, which was following, improving quickly onto the heels of O'REILLY'S GOLD, clipping that runner's heels and blundering. Whilst stewards were of the opinion that D. Griffin had not steadied the pace excessively, the incident occurred due to a combination of apprentice Priest failing to steady her mount quickly enough and the pace being steadied slightly. In the circumstances stewards took no direct action other than to remind apprentice Priest of her responsibility to ride in a manner that does not compromise the safety of herself or other riders.
Apprentice C. Priest, the rider of LAUGHING CRUSADER, pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii) of using the whip in a forehand manner on more than five occasions prior to the 100m and was fined $200.
